Using SSL for Email with Outlook Express

You can configure Outlook Express to use SSL for communication. if your ISP blocks port 25, you can configure Outlook Express to use SSL secure connection.

To configure SSL (secure connections) in Outlook Express, follow the steps below:

  • Go to Outlook Express -> Tools -> Account
  • Click on Mail tab -> highlight your email account -> Properties
  • Click on the servers tab at the top. At the bottom of that window put the check in the box that says “My server requires authentication”. Then click the "settings” button to the right.
  • In the “Outgoing Mail Server” window select the “Log on using” option. Make sure that "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" is selected, check the "Log on using secure password authentication" is checked, and make sure the “Remember password” option is checked. Then click ok at the bottom of that window.
  • Click on “Advanced” tab, Server Port No. for Outgoing Mail SMTP change to 465
  • 'Tick' the “This server require a secure connection (SSL)” box below the SMTP port section (it should look something like the screen below)

  • Click OK and Close the “Account” window.
  • Done, your mail account will use secure connection for the email connection

Now you can try to send your email.

Outlook Express may prompt you to accept a security certificate, just click on "Accept" or "Trust" to complete the process. (it will look something like the below screen)

Accessing email via your web browser with Webmail

You can access your email from any internet connected computer without the need to configure any software.

Just access your email via webmail at http://obrienmedia.co.uk/webmail

Just enter your full email address as the username and associated email account password to log in.

If using a shared computer don't forget to log out when you're done!

Setting up your email on an Android device

  1. Open your device's email application.
  2. If you already have an email account set up, press Menu and tap Accounts. Press Menu again and tap Add account.
  3. Type your Email address and Password, and click Next.
  4. If you have IMAP, tap IMAP. If you're not sure, tap POP3.
  5. Use these settings for your incoming server, depending on the type of email you have:
    POP3
    Username Enter your full email address.
    Password Enter your email account password.
    POP3 server pop3.obrienmedia.co.uk
    Port 110
    IMAP
    Username Enter your full email address.
    Password Enter your email account password.
    IMAP server imap.obrienmedia.co.uk
    Port 143
  6. Use these settings for your outgoing server:
    SMTP (Outgoing Mail Server)
    SMTP server smtp.obrienmedia.co.uk
    Port 25
    Security type None
  7. Select Require sign-in and make sure your Username (your full email address) and Password are correct. Tap Next.
  8. Tap Next again. Name your account and enter the name you want to display on outgoing messages.
  9. Tap Done.

That's it. If everything is working OK, you should see some email messages start to arrive.

Setting up your email in Outlook

Follow the steps below to add an account to Outlook.

  1. Launch Outlook

  2. Select "Tools" from the Menu bar.

  3. Select "Email Accounts" from the Tools menu. The Email Accounts Wizard will appear.

  4. Under the Email heading, select "Add a new email account." Click "Next."

  5. Select server type. We provide IMAP and POP3 email access, IMAP stores your email on the server and is best if you're accessing your messages from multiple devices (a desktop computer and an iPhone for example as you'll see messages on both).  Click "Next."

  6. Enter e-mail settings. Fill in:

    1. Your Name - use your full name and use title case (e.g. Jane Doe) as this is how your name will appear when others receive your email

    2. Email Address

    3. User Name (for O'Brien Media email accounts this is the full email address)

    4. Password (established when you set up the email account)

    5. Use these settings for your incoming server, depending on the type of email you have:
      POP3
      POP3 server pop3.obrienmedia.co.uk
      Port 110
      IMAP
      IMAP server imap.obrienmedia.co.uk
      Port 143
    6. Use these settings for your outgoing server:
      SMTP (Outgoing Mail Server)
      SMTP server smtp.obrienmedia.co.uk
      Port 25
  7. Test account settings to make sure your address and settings are working properly. (Note: You must be connected to the Internet to perform this test.) Click the "Test Account Settings." You may need to adjust some of your settings. To do so, click "More Settings." After settings are correct, click "Next."

    Note: Some outgoing servers, such as those provided by O'Brien Media, require authentication. To activate this setting:

  8. Click "More Settings"

  9. Go to the "Outgoing Server" tab

  10. Check the box next to "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication."

  11. In most cases select "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" radio button.

  12. Click "OK."

A 'Congratulations' screen will appear. You have successfully entered the required account information. Click "Finish" to exit the email wizard. To add more email address to Outlook, repeat the above steps.
