Cloudflare takes encryption and cryptographic security seriously – so seriously, in fact, that they use a wall of Lava Lamps in their San Francisco headquarters as part of their process for generating random numbers used in encryption. This technique, called entropy harvesting, relies on randomness. And nothing says random like the unpredictable swirls and blobs of a few dozen Lava Lamps doing their thing.
Every movement is captured on camera, translated into data, and used to help generate cryptographic keys. Since it’s nearly impossible to predict the exact movement of Lava Lamp wax, this creates a super secure, ever-changing stream of entropy that helps protect data and secure websites. It’s geeky, brilliant, and just a little bit magical.
