Like us here at O’Brien Media, you have probably been aware of the extremely hot weather over the last couple of days!
Regardless of whether we love the sunshine or hate the heat, there are some things we need to be aware of to ensure that we keep ourselves safe!
What has the Met Office announced and why is this important?
The Met Office has announced an ‘extreme weather warning’ for the first-ever time in the UK.
This is in partnership with Public Health England and covers a large part of Wales, all of southwest England, and parts of southern and central England. The amber warning will be in force until the end of Thursday.
A Met Office spokesman has said: “High temperatures both by day and night will continue this week leading to public health impacts
“Adverse health effects are likely to be experienced by those vulnerable to extreme heat.
What are the dangers?
The Met Office spokesman continued:
“The wider population are likely to experience some adverse health effects including sunburn or heat exhaustion (dehydration, nausea, fatigue) and other heat related illnesses.
“More people are likely to visit coastal areas, lakes and rivers leading to an increased risk of water safety incidents.
“Some changes in working practices and daily routines likely to be required.
“An increased chance that some heat-sensitive systems and equipment may fail, leading to power cuts and the loss of other services to some homes and businesses.
“Some delays to road, rail and air travel are possible, with potential for welfare issues for those who experience prolonged delays.”
Who are the most vulnerable?
Dr Owen Landeg, Scientific and Technical Lead at PHE, said: “Everybody can be affected by high temperatures and most people are aware of good health advice for coping with hot weather. However, it’s important to keep checking on those who are most vulnerable such as older people and those with heart or lung conditions.”
“Remember to look out for signs of heat exhaustion and follow our simple health advice to beat the heat.”
