How to Build Campaign Tracking Links in Client Connect

Create tracking links with UTM tags in Client Connect to find out which campaigns, emails and posts bring visitors to your website.

When you promote your website through an email, a social media post or an advert, how do you know which one brought a visitor? The Tracking Link Builder adds standard tracking tags (known as UTM tags) to a web address, so your website statistics can show where each visit came from. It works with Google Analytics 4, Matomo (set up to read UTM tags) and other popular analytics systems.

Finding the tool

  1. Sign in to connect.obrienmedia.uk.
  2. Open Tools in the menu, then Tracking Link Builder.

The UTM Tracking Link Builder, with a base URL box and boxes for the campaign source, medium, name and other tags

Creating a link

  1. Under Destination, enter the Base URL, the page you want to link to. Any existing parts of the address after a question mark are kept.
  2. Under Campaign Parameters, fill in the tags (see below). The first three are the important ones.
  3. Leave Force lowercase values ticked, so that “Facebook” and “facebook” do not appear as two different sources in your reports.
  4. Choose Generate your link. You can then copy the link, or generate a QR code that anyone can scan to visit the page using your tracking link. Choose Reset to start again.

What the tags mean

  • utm_source is where the visitor came from, such as newsletter, facebook or leaflet.
  • utm_medium is the type of channel, such as email, social or print.
  • utm_campaign is the name of the campaign, such as spring-sale.
  • utm_id, utm_term and utm_content are optional. Use content to tell two links in the same email apart, and term for a paid search keyword.

Tips

  • Use the same spelling every time. Agree names such as newsletter and facebook and stick to them.
  • Only use tracking links when you control where they are placed, such as in your own emails and posts. Do not use them for links within your own website, as that can disrupt your statistics.
  • Look for the results in your website statistics, under where visitors come from.
