How to Change DNS Records for www and non-www in IONOS

These instructions cover how to change the DNS settings for your IONOS registered domain name to use our website hosting services while keeping any other services (email, etc) with IONOS.

These instructions will work for our primary WordPress server, server1.obrienmedia.co.uk (185.230.220.186) replace the IP address to point the DNS records to any other server.

1) Log in to IONOS

  1. Go to the IONOS website and sign in to your account.
  2. Open Domains & SSL.
  3. Select the domain name you want to edit.

2) Open DNS Settings

  1. Find your domain and open DNS (or DNS Settings).
  2. You’ll see a list of current DNS records (A, CNAME, MX, TXT, etc.).

3) Update the non-www (root) domain using an A record

This controls the non-www version, for example example.co.uk.

  1. Look for an A record where the host name is @ (or sometimes it appears blank).
  2. If it exists, edit it and set the IP address to 185.230.220.186.
  3. If it doesn’t exist, add a new record:
    • Type: A
    • Host name: @
    • Points to: 185.230.220.186
  4. Save your changes.

4) Update the www version

This controls the www version, for example www.example.co.uk.

Recommended: Use a CNAME record for www

  1. Look for a CNAME record where the host name is www.
  2. If it exists, edit it so it points to your root domain (for example example.co.uk).
  3. If it doesn’t exist, add a new record:
    • Type: CNAME
    • Host name: www
    • Points to: example.co.uk
  4. Save your changes.

If there is an existing A record for www

  1. Check whether there is an A record with the host name www.
  2. If you prefer to use an A record instead of a CNAME, edit the www A record and set it to 185.230.220.186.
  3. Alternatively, delete the www A record and replace it with a CNAME pointing to example.co.uk.
  4. Save your changes.

5) Allow time for the changes to take effect

DNS updates often start working within 10–60 minutes, but can take up to 24 hours to fully update worldwide.
