How to Make Your Own DNS Changes in Client Connect

How to view, add, edit and remove DNS records for your domains in Client Connect without raising a ticket, with a guide to the record types and how to change them safely.

If your domain’s DNS is managed through us, Client Connect lets you make your own DNS changes without waiting on a ticket. DNS is the address book of the internet. Its records say where your website lives, where your email is delivered and which services are allowed to send email for your domain. The DNS tool in Client Connect is powered by Cloudflare.

Please note: DNS records is available to accounts with DNS access. If you cannot see it in your menu, ask us and we will tell you whether it can be switched on for you.

Before you make a change

A wrong DNS record can take your website or your email offline, so it is worth taking a moment first:

  • Write down, or take a screenshot of, the record as it is now, so you can put it back if you need to.
  • Make sure you know exactly what the new value should be. The company asking you to make the change should give you the details.
  • If you are not sure, ask us before you change anything. We would rather check with you than fix a problem afterwards.

Viewing your records

  1. Sign in to connect.obrienmedia.uk.
  2. Open DNS records from the menu.
  3. Choose the domain you want to work on, if you have more than one.

You will see a list of the records for that domain. Menu names can change slightly as we improve Client Connect.

Adding, editing and removing records

  • Add: choose to add a record, pick the type, enter the name and the value you have been given, and save.
  • Edit: choose the record you want to change, update the value and save.
  • Remove: choose the record you no longer need and delete it. Only remove a record when you are sure it is not in use.

The main record types

  • A and AAAA point a name, such as your domain, at the server hosting your website.
  • CNAME makes one name an alias of another, for example www pointing at your main domain.
  • MX says where your email is delivered. The lowest priority number is tried first.
  • TXT holds text used for email security (SPF, DKIM and DMARC) and for proving you own a domain to services such as Google and Microsoft.

After you save

Changes can take a little while to show up everywhere, depending on the record’s TTL, which is how long other servers keep a copy. You can check what the rest of the internet sees using our DNS lookup. If you are changing records to move your website or email, it is a good idea to test both once the change has spread.

If something goes wrong

Put the record back as you noted it before the change, then contact us straight away and we will help put things right. If you were asked to change records so a service can be set up, our guide to giving us access to your Cloudflare account may be useful if you would rather we make the change.

Not sure about anything? Contact us or raise a ticket from your Client Connect account and we will be happy to help.
