PTSD Awareness Day 2024 – Chris’ Story

Living with PTSD: A Personal Journey

My name is Chris, and I am the Senior Developer at O’Brien Media. Despite my professional achievements, I live with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), which has also led to anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder, along with epilepsy. These conditions make daily life challenging, but with the right support and treatments, I lead a fulfilling life.

“Living with mental health conditions means having good and bad days, but with the support of understanding people and treatments like medication and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), I maintain a fulfilling life.”

Understanding PTSD

PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms can include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event. It’s crucial to understand that PTSD is treatable, and with the right approach, individuals can manage their symptoms and lead productive lives.

Treatment Options

There are various treatments available for PTSD, including:

  • Therapy: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is particularly effective for PTSD. It helps individuals process their trauma and develop coping strategies.
  • Medication: Antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications can help manage symptoms.
  • Alternative Treatments: Practices such as mindfulness, yoga, and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) have shown promise in treating PTSD.

Managing a Business with PTSD

Running a business while managing PTSD is challenging but achievable. It requires a balance of self-care, professional support, and understanding your limits. Here are some strategies that have helped me:

  1. Prioritise Self-Care: Ensure you take time for activities that reduce stress and improve your mental health.
  2. Seek Support: Lean on friends, family, and mental health professionals for support.
  3. Be Open: Communicate your needs and challenges with your team. Openness fosters a supportive work environment.
  4. Set Realistic Goals: Understand your limits and set achievable goals. Celebrate small victories along the way.

Conclusion

Living with PTSD while running a business is not only possible but can also be highly fulfilling. With the right strategies and support, you can overcome the challenges and thrive in both your personal and professional life.
