LinkedIn are removing Stories from their platform

LinkedIn Stories were only introduced last year, but they are already being removed. It did not have the impact that the team at LinkedIn expected. (It follows Twitter also removing the short-lived ‘Fleets’ from their platform too!)

This blog post will explain why LinkedIn are removing stories and making this change.

What are LinkedIn Stories?

LinkedIn Stories were introduced last year.

They were meant to be a fun and casual way to share video updates. Their purpose was to be used as a way to share bite-sized glimpses of video content in a professional context.

Why are they be removed?

According to Liz Li, the Senior Director of Product at LinkedIn:

  • People wished videos could live on your profile, not disappear.
    • Liz’s response to this was “In developing Stories, we assumed people wouldn’t want informal videos attached to their profile, and that ephemerality would reduce barriers that people feel about posting. Turns out, you want to create lasting videos that tell your professional story in a more personal way and that showcase both your personality and expertise.”
  • People wanted more creative tools to make engaging videos.
    • Liz’s response to this was “With Stories, members could use Stickers and “The Question of the Day” prompts to make videos more creative and engaging. But you want even more ways to spruce up those videos in a professional context, and you want to do so across LinkedIn.”

When are stories being removed?

LinkedIn are removing stories from their platform at the end of September.
